2023 King of The Hill Reboot Breakdown

The following is everything we currently know surrounding the reboot of the popular Fox series King of The Hill coming in 2023.

Seemingly since its cancellation, the audience has been clamoring for a return of Mike Judge’s beloved King of The Hill series. The rumor mill began turning in 2017 as the cast reunited alongside creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels for the show’s 20th-anniversary at San Francisco Sketchfest.

Since Judge’s success with the HBO-ordered movie and subsequent revival of Beavis and Butthead, it seemed like only a matter of time before we saw KOTH follow suit. With both Daniels and Judge openly and vocally in favor of some form of reboot or revival for the show, fans remained optimistic the Arlen gang would get a second life. In 2021 another big announcement broke from show writer Brett Forrester when he was asked if there were any plans for a possible King Of The Hill return during a Reddit AMA. He responded with the following, “I am sure Greg Daniels and Mike Judge will murder me for sharing this but… HELL YES. They are in hot negotiations to bring back King of the Hill.” With this, the internet went absolutely wild as it seemed now we were cooking with propane.

Fast forward to January 31st, 2023 and Hulu announced they had ordered a revival of the beloved series. At the current moment, it appears the majority of the original voice cast will be returning to reprise their respective roles including of course Hank Hill (Mike Judge), Bill Dauterive (Stephen Root), Dale Gribble (Johnny Hardwick), Jeff Boomhauer (also Mike Judge),  Peggy Hill (Kathy Najimy), Bobby Hill (Pamela Adlon), and Minh Souphanousinphone (Lauren Tom), As expressed by Deadline.

Characters NOT Confirmed

As of now, we only know the returning characters via their voice actors’ involvement. Unfortunately, real life happens and in 2009 voice actor Brittany Murphy passed away at the age of 32. Her role as Luanne Platter, Peggy’s niece, is one that is very much still up in the air with Judge not yet commenting if he has plans for a replacement voice actor to continue the character. However, this isn’t out of the realm of possibility as we saw in 1997 with Jonathan Joss taking over the role of John Redcorn following the untimely passing of original voice actor Victor Aaron.

Alongside Luanne, poetically, is the case of her husband Lucky who was famously voiced by the late Tom Petty. While Lucky’s role can be argued as a more minor one, later seasons began including him more frequently in gang hijinks as well as his own stories within the show.

On another note, there does seem to be one glaring, living, omission from the confirmed cast list. While his wife Minh is slated to return, Hank’s foil, Khan Souphanousinphone ( Toby Huss) is not mentioned. While he most definitely has the more prominent role of the two, the issue is suspected to be one behind the sense with cancel culture. While Kahn is famously Laotian, just ask Cotton Hill, His voice actor Toby Huss is not of any form of Asian descent. With the recent recasting of characters like The Simpsons Apu getting major blowback, this may be seen as a topic of contention for the relaunch. Whether this means finding a different voice actor or simply not shining a light on the character until the show is running remains to be seen.

Everything We Know About The King Of The Hill Reboot

While not much has been brought to the public yet, here is everything we know about the KOTH reboot.

Originally airing from 1997-2010 over 13 seasons, King Of The Hill left its devoted audience craving more. Over the past decade, fans have been speculating and fantasizing about what Arlen life has been like since the final scene wrapped. The answer to that question may finally be upon the horizon as series creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels have been reported to be reviving the series by The Hollywood Reporter. The duo is set to oversee the creation and production of the revival under their new animation company, Bandera Entertainment. This announcement follows the revival of Judge’s other popular series Beavis and Butthead, which has been picked up for a new movie coming to paramount+ set in 2022. The movie is set to also be followed by the TV series reboot, however, a time frame for this has yet to be announced.

While Judge has been rather vocal about the return of Beavis and Butthead, it would seem the King Of The Hill project is still being kept close to the chest. Reports of the reboot first came about during a Reddit AMA in 2021 with show writer Brett Forrester when he was asked if there are any plans on a possible King Of The Hill return. Forrester told the Redditor, “I am sure Greg Daniels and Mike Judge will murder me for sharing this but… HELL YES. They are in hot negotiations to bring back King of the Hill.” It would seem as though all the stars seem to be aligning and aligning very soon. While it is still unclear whether or not the show’s return will be set in 2022, it seems rather likely considering Judge’s similar move with Beavis and Butthead, as well as the trend brought about by the most recent South Park special on Paramount+.

While Judge and Garcia are seemingly keeping the majority of announcements under wraps at the moment, we are eagerly waiting for an official statement on the reboot of one of our favorite series. What do you think will be the setting of the KOTH reboot, let us know down below!

King of The Hill Movie?

Is there a King of The Hill movie on the way?

On December 3rd 2020 the King of The Hill Facebook page uploaded a photo of a fan made KOTH movie poster. The poster features a live action cast of the animated characters Hank, Dale, Bill, Boomhauer, and Khan. While a KOTH movie has been a topic widely discussed in recent years, since the upload the King of The Hill community has been quite vocal in voicing their opinions on the cast choice of the theoretical film. While the possibility of Mike Judge signing off on a live action King of The Hill movie is still up in the air, we’ve complied some alternate casting choices that may fit the bill a litter more accurately!

Bill Dauterive

While the artist who composed the theoretical movie poster chose David Koechner to play the role of army barber Bill Dauterive, we here at StylesRebelRadio.com believe the right casting choice may have been right under our nose. Voice and veteran actor Stephen Root who provides the voice of Bill in the animated series is seemingly the perfect choice. With roles under his belt in films such as Dodgeball and Drillbit Taylor , Root is perfect for paying the role of the sympathetic, awkward friend. Not to mention there is absolutely no need to worry about recreating the well known voice!

Honorable mention to John C. Reilly.

Jeff Boomhauer

In the case that is the fast yet smooth talking ladies man, Boomhauer, we believe they hit the nail on the head with Matthew Mcconaughey! Who else could pull off the role of speaking absolute southern twanged nonsense and make it charming! We already know Mcconaughy is willing to go to any lengths necessary appearance wise to fill his role and while the voice not be exactly like the animated counterpart, we are sure Mcconaughey’s natural drawl and ability to ramble will fit the bill alright, alright, alright!

Kahn Souphanousinphone

For every great protagonist there has to be an equal foil. When it comes to the simple down home lifestyle Hank Hill lives by Kahn is the perfect foil. The over the top pompous, annoying, next door neighbor to the Hill family requires an actor with a wide range of emotions. While the proposed Ken Jong is not a bad choice by any means, for the role of Kahn we are looking for someone who can pull off the stern annoyed neighbor quality but transition to the over the top persona Jong is known for. For that, we are choosing John Cho. Cho is no stranger to the over the top antics frequented by Kahn, as showcased in the Harold and Kumar series! Cho also possesses the ranger however to pull off the stern, aggravated neighbor who is always ready with a quick qip as shown in his role as Sulu in 2009s Star Trek.

Dale Gribble

Once again we have to agree it with the proposed line up, Bill Hader for Dale Gribble seems like the absolute perfect fit. While other proposed casting choices include the likes of Neil Patrick Harris or Steve Buscemi as the role of Dale, something is seemingly left to be desired. Surely Mr. Buscemi or NPH would be able to make a memorable and fitting role as the man known as Rusty Shackleford, SNL legend Bill Hader without a doubt could go line for line with Dale Gribble. With the physical appearance to fit the part, Hader’s extensive library of impressions would seal the deal for a live action Dale Gribble.

Hank Hill

Now for the man of the hour! Hank Rutherford Hill is the stern, hardworking, blue collar main character of the King of The Hill series! Ironically this is the entry we have the most opposition too. Granted the most known and beloved character is typically the hardest to cast. The proposed choice, Tom Hanks, most likely chosen for his calm, stern demeanor and vague resemblance to Hank seems like a lazy and over exhausted pick. After scouring the internet for a more suitable live action adaptation, we are prepared to offer a fresh alternative to the table that we have not seen anywhere else.

Dennis Quaid is our pick to poetry Hank Hill. When deciding upon this casting, we broke down Hank Hill into three basic characteristics. First we looked at his appearance, Hank is a man plain and simple. Your stereotypical working and family man, Blue jeans, a tee shirt, and short respectable haircut. Dennis Quaid fits that bill fairly well. A harkening back to actors of the past Mr. Quaid has what we can best describe is the face of a man. Secondly, Hank Hill’s very distinct and impressionable voice. While not exactly a difficult impression to do, perhaps one of the hardest to master. Enter Dennis Quaid’s ability to study and recreate voices to near perfection! Don’t believe me, take his performance as the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis in Great Balls of Fire for example! Last but certainly not least, Hank Hill is a father. I mean, just look at him. Dennis Quaid just looks like your stereotypical dad. Need more convincing, check out his performance as the strict yet comedic father in the film Yous, Mine, and ours.

That’s our list! Let us know what you think and who you would cast to play all the characters in a King of The Hill live action film! Make sure to check out similar blogs on StylesRebelradio.com under The Rebel Blogs!
